MBTA
Having lived in a Boston suburb my whole life, I ventured into the city hundreds of times for various reasons. Many occasions I used the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority trains, or the "T", as my main source of transportation. I found myself disappointed in more than one aspect of the transportation system. A few times I got on trains going the wrong direction, missed trains due to poor signage, and once I found myself stranded in Boston after running past a terminal on the street.
For my senior thesis project, I decided I wanted to use design to solve an issue that I found in the public. It doesn't get any more public than a MTBA train.
The final project will be a rebranding of the MBTA, new signage, promotional material and new mobile app that will include a terminal locator, navigation, and a payment system that will eliminate the need for buying a new plastic slip every time a passenger goes for a ride. Currently such an app exists (MBTA mTicket - only for purchasing tickets), however it is poorly designed and never really gained much traction due to its lackluster functionality.
